ABOUT
Nathan Nolan Newrohr Cook is a St. Louis-based graphic designer, visual artist, illustrator, sound artist, photographer, experimental musician, and curator. His passion is working with educational institutions, museums, and nonprofit organizations in the arts to foster creativity, growth, and community in the St. Louis region and beyond.
BIO PERFORMANCE
Multi-disciplinary sound and visual artist, Nathan Cook runs the cassette label Close/Far Recordings. He performs solo and actively seeks out collaborations as NNN Cook. Regularly performing in St. Louis he has shared programs with national and international artists such as: John Luther Adams, Rene Hell, Coppice, Jozef Van Wissem, King Britt, Moor Mother, Jason Kahn, Darin Gray, JG Thirlwell, and Keith Fullerton Whitman. He has collaborated with regional artists: Damon Smith, Regicide Bureau, Josh Levi, JoAnn McNeil, Jeremy Kannapell, and Kevin Harris to name a few. Although he has performed in Chicago, Kansas City, and Tulsa, among other Midwestern cities, most of his performances have been in St. Louis for such organizations as: Saint Louis Contemporary Art Museum, The William A. Kerr Foundation, The Luminary, New Music Circle, Apop Records, Floating Laboratories, Way Out Club, The Museum of Contemporary Religious Art, Open Lot, projects+gallery, and Public Media Commons.
Recent commissioned public projects have been collaborations with the Laumeier Sculpture Park (St. Louis) for Site/Sound, the World Chess Hall of Fame (St. Louis) for a performance of John Cage’s Reunion, the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis for Audible Interruptions, a residency with High Concept Laboratories (Chicago), a performance for Experimental Sound Studio’s (Chicago) Oscillations concert series, a visiting artist performance for the University of Missouri Electronic Music Department, a commissioned composition for Alarm Will Sound (NYC), and a festival performance at Worm (Rotterdam).
His work is typically concerned with proximity, geometry, mysticism, acoustics, psychodynamics, identity, and the primeval. The Wire magazine said this of his solo release, (Bl)end User: “Regarding the latter (analogue electronics), Nathan Cook is a distinctive voice in this crowded field.”
